SPARRING

Sparring (practice fighting) is an important part of martial arts training and one of the ways students learn to apply their skills in a controlled, realistic setting. It allows students to practice offensive and defensive techniques, improve timing and distance, develop strategy, and build confidence.

For many students, sparring is also one of the most enjoyable and challenging parts of training.

TYPES OF SPARRING

Depending on the student's age, rank, and experience, sparring may include:

  • Freestyle Sparring

  • Point Sparring

  • Contact Sparring — Adults only

SAFETY & CONTROL

At Keefe's Martial Arts, safety and control are always emphasized during sparring. Protective equipment is intended to help protect a student in the event of accidental contact. Sparring gear is not intended to encourage or permit uncontrolled contact.

Whenever possible, students are paired with partners of similar age, size, and experience. However, students may occasionally be paired with someone of a different experience level. This may be done intentionally because an experienced student generally has greater control and can work more defensively, helping a less-experienced student develop skills safely and confidently.

Students are expected to demonstrate control, respect, and good sportsmanship at all times.
